Description
The #22 tin ceiling design (24 in. x 24 in.) is an ornate and decorate tile that was salvaged from an abandoned building in the 1800s in Cheyenne, Wyoming that was destroyed by fire. It is an authentic replication of an original Victorian pattern, full of elegant etched borders and a hammered fill leading the eye to an ornate medallion cross in the center.

Backsplash kits contain Safety Glasses, Caulking Gun, Adhesive - 3 Tubes, Tape Measure, Gloves, Tin Snips, 100 Nails in your choice of color.
If you plan on using the metal molding with a suspended ceiling, we do not recommend attaching to the grid. The panels end up below the bottom of the grid and the molding will push up on the panels. As the molding will need 2 nailing points, we suggest some additional wood structure to get your second nailing point.

Many of our colors require unique mixes or a multiple step finishing process. The Premium & Artisan colors can be affected by many factors, so we suggest that you order enough of these panels and moldings to do your job the first time. If you need more of that color at a later date we cannot guarantee that the run will match exactly with your original order.
Unfortunately, the Premium & Artisan colors can not be returned. All Acoustical and Metric-Drop panels are made to order and are non-returnable.

Fire Protection
Introduced to America in the early 19th century, tin ceiling tiles are historically known not just for their originality and elegance, but also for their function as a fire protectant. In urban areas, tin ceilings were installed in buildings that had businesses on the first floor and tenants in living apartments or rooms above. On numerous accounts, tin ceilings helped desist fires from spreading to the upper levels, saving lives. Metal tin tiles have a fire rating of over one-hour.
Some metals like aluminum and steel aren’t combustible, but buckle under intense heat. Since our tiles are made from T1 grade tin plated steel, they are 0.010 thick and sturdy, thus carrying an ASTM E 84-03b approval rating (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). We’ve tested our product with 1000°F of heat being delivered by a propane torch for over 50 seconds and as far back as 1914, the Fire Underwriter’s Association has been running similar tests to ensure authenticity.
With more than 2,500 people killed per year in residential fires, when you undergo a home remodel, it’s important to consider the safety of the materials you’re choosing for your family, pets and loved ones. When you compare tin plated steel to plastic, which melts in just 5 ½ minutes, which would you rather have in your house?
Green / Sustainable Tin Ceiling Tiles
Being green is an important aspect in business today. We take pride in what we do and how we do it.
If you care about the environment and adopting a sustainable lifestyle, you may be concerned about what products you're using in your home – and rightfully so, being it is the place you spend the most time. With many building materials containing toxic chemicals, you can rest assured our tin ceiling tiles are not only eco-friendly, but completely safe. The American Tin Ceiling Company is environmentally conscious and has been long before going green was a trend.
Recycled Materials
Our American-made tin ceiling tiles are manufactured from repurposed steel leftover from the automotive, appliance, container, industrial machinery, construction, and oil and gas industries. They are made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating. The tin used in the plating process is sourced from conflict-free countries. There are no harmful production processes and we control every step of the stamping and coating processes to ensure it meets our stringent requirements. Our packaging is also made from recycled material.
No Toxic VOCs
Our powder-coating used for all of our colors are non-toxic and non-flammable. Powder coating, the company’s finishing process adheres to the “Five E’s” – environmental compliance, energy savings, efficiency, excellence of finish, and economy. Powder coating contains no solvents, which are found in liquid finishes like paints, also known as VOC’s – volatile organic compounds. VOCS are dangerous in that they can degrade air quality or cause breathing problems and other health effects. Since powder coating uses only dry paint, it requires no special venting.
Specifications
All of our products are manufactured from a T1 grade tin-plated steel. They are made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating. This is generally referred to as “bright tinplate.” The material thickness is 0.010”. All our panels are 24” x 24”, regardless of pattern or color and all moldings are sold in 4’ lengths. All of our finishes are powder-coated. Powder coating is an electrostatic process where polyester resin is baked onto the panels at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Our faux finishes are hand applied over a powder coated base color. All of our products carry an ASTM E 84-03b fire rating (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). If you have any questions, call the design center at 888.231.7500.
To specify our material, we need the following:
1. Pattern number
2. Tile type (Nail-Up/Backsplash, Drop-In, Snap Lock™, Acoustical Nail-Up, Acoustical Drop-In)
The Snap Lock™ panel type is our proprietary interlocking flange system designed to attach directly to existing drywall, popcorn or plaster ceilings with #6 drywall screws (intended for ceiling installations only). The screws are not visible.
The Nail-Up panel has a 1/4" overlapping seam and is designed to be nailed to a wood substrate (plywood, furring strips, joists). We recommend 18 gauge brad nails for installation. The nails are visible, but can be concealed with touch-up paint.
Drop-In panels are made to fit a standard 24" x 24" suspended ceiling grid system with 15/16" bar widths. Our Drop-In panels have a 1/8" embossed edge that helps it nest into the grid opening. If you have a 24" x 48" grid, we offer T-bar pieces to easily convert it into a 24" x 24" grid.
3. Color
4. Optional materials (molding, accessories, installation items)
Plastic VS Tin Tiles
We know you have a choice when it comes to ceiling tiles and home remodeling. In fact, you're probably overwhelmed with choices from colors and patterns to finishes and materials. But when it comes to deciding between real tin and a plastic imposter, consider a few things:
Cost
While many simply assume that plastic is less expensive, this is rarely the case. White plastic tiles start at $3.50/sq. ft, while a range of white tin tiles cost as little as $3.00/sq. ft. Raw tin is available for as little as $1.75/sq. ft.
Durability
Made from real T1 grade tin-plated steel, our tin tiles are 0.010″ thick to ensure they’re a long lasting, permanent fixture in your home or commercial space.
Aesthetics
Nothing can replace the integrity and authenticity of tin – the difference is visible immediately.
Color
Plastic color ranges are limited and have difficulty displaying realistic sheen. Our tin ceiling tiles are powder-coated, a superior finish compared to paint or injection. Finishes are genuine and authentic.
Installation Options
Plastic ceiling tiles are glued which can deteriorate over time. Our tin tiles are offered in three installation methods – Nail-Up, Drop-In and patented Snap Lock™, that can be affixed to virtually any building material and stand the test of time.
Fire Rating
Metal Ceilings have a one-hour fire rating, making them much safer in case of accident. Plastic melts in just 5 ½ minutes and releases toxic gases.
Environmental Concerns
Tin is also better for the environment, emitting no dangerous VOCs, which can degrade air quality or cause breathing or health problems over time. Tin ceiling tiles are made in part from authentic US steel, the most recycled material in the world so it's both green and durable. Plastic comes largely in part from crude oil. Which would you rather have in your home or commercial space?
Less costly, better for the environment, more durable, and safer are all reasons to choose authentic tin over plastic ceiling tiles.
Our Tin VS Theirs
Premium-tin plated steel
These tiles (offered by American Tin Ceilings) have a bright tin coating over black plate recycled steel that allows it to be clear coated and is bright. Tin plated steel costs more as the real tin is used for coating. This also allows us to stock a large inventory as tin plate protects the black plate from rusting.
Black plate
The base metal which our leading competitor sells, and does not contain a tin coating. Black plate has a gray hue to it so clear coat shows up as gray and dull. There is no shine to black plate. The steel has no coating, resulting in rusting quickly in humid environments.
Aluminum
Lighter than tin, but gray in color, and does not provide crisp patterns due to the softness of the metal. This tends to oxidize and must be cleaned with acetone prior to painting or powder coating. Aluminum is more expensive and sells for more than tin plated steel.
Manufacturing
We are the Largest Manufacturer and Direct Shipper of Tin Ceiling Tiles in the World
From receiving the metal to stamping the designs, powder coating the finishes and shipping the tiles directly to your door, we pride ourselves on offering 100% American-made products from our Bradenton, Florida location. As one of the only on-shore tin ceiling manufacturers and suppliers, you may be wondering how we can offer the lowest prices in the world for finished tiles without sacrificing quality materials or US jobs. We’ll break down the process for you:
American Tin Ceiling Company purchases large coil stock from US steel suppliers.
Based in the USA, our material manufacturers develop a wide range of steel products for the automotive, appliance, container, industrial machinery, construction, and oil and gas industries. We have developed a great relationship with our suppliers over the years so we are able to negotiate the lowest cost of raw materials and ensure availability to meet demand. Our panels are made with T1 grade tin-plated steel that is made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating.
Tin is stamped and embossed.
From our stamping presses, we emboss all 35+ patterns and are continually developing new designs. If you purchase unfinished tiles, they're now ready to ship. We stock over 100,000 unfinished panels in our warehouse so almost everything is ready to go as soon as you place an order.
Add some color.
Powder coating is a formula made of polyester resin, pigment and occasionally pulverized metal, which are electrostatically charged with opposing currents and sprayed onto the panels. This electricity ensures the product surface is evenly coated with long lasting adhesive, which is better for the environment and safer than regular paint because they emit no harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). We develop all of our own custom formulated colors and antiquing methods from industry leaders like Dupont and TCI that you won’t find from any other manufacturer.
To finish the tiles, the panels are run through an automatic powder booth where spray guns are used to coat the panels with powder. Once the color sets, they are put into a 400-450 degree oven to melt the pigments and gel them to the tiles. This process ensures the highest quality, most authentic and long lasting finishes in the industry.
Shipping direct to your door.
Orders are shipped by a variety of carriers depending on your location, and the size of the order. We ship internationally and offer the industry's best prices, often over 50% off standard freight rates through large volume deals negotiated with recognized carriers.

Finishing Unfinished Panels
Preparing Unfinished Tin Tiles
We recommend that unfinished panels be finished to prevent oxidation. They can be painted or clear coated.
If you plan to paint unfinished tiles, you must first treat them before applying paint. This requires a primer, which the paint will adhere to. Metal requires an ‘oil-based’ primer. When shopping, make sure you purchase one that has a rust inhibitor to avoid corrosion. Spray paints are almost always used when finishing metal.
Clear-Coat Unfinished Tin Tiles
If you plan to seal your unfinished metal panels yourself instead of purchasing a silver powder-coated tile from us, you can use a polyurethane suitable for metal. It is recommended to use a powder-coated finish for durability, however some projects require they be finished in the field. An oil based product must be used.
