Wainscoting- what is it?

Wainscoting’s origins can be traced back to 16th century England where it was applied to lower sections of stone walls to counteract the cold and dampness. It used to refer to only wood, literally “wall boards” made of Wainscot oak, but today the term is more inclusive of any type of ornate wall insulation used as decorative paneling.
