Builder-Grade Dining Room Turned Bold Speakeasy--on a Budget

What do you get when you blend old-world German charm with vintage flair and a passion for DIY? For one creative couple, the answer was a total transformation of their builder-grade dining room into a moody, character-rich speakeasy—complete with a stunning tin ceiling in our Pattern #2 in Copper Penny finish.

This inspiring renovation by Alissa Steinbrugge showcases the power of intentional design and creative thinking. Not only did this couple design a multifunctional space for entertaining, but they did it all on a budget—with plenty of personal touches and DIY ingenuity.

From Formal Dining to Speakeasy Style

The project began with a vision: repurpose the formal dining room into a space that could host everything from bourbon tastings and game nights to family dinners and dancing. The result is a warm, inviting room that balances vintage style with modern function.

Inspired by old-world German architecture—which often features intricate tin ceilings—the couple began searching for the perfect ceiling detail to anchor their speakeasy-inspired space. That journey led them to American Tin Ceilings.

“We both love old-world German architecture, which is often accented by tin ceilings, and that started our journey with ATC and our vintage-inspired speakeasy!”

Choosing the Right Tin Ceiling

To bring their vision to life, the couple selected Pattern #2, one of our most versatile and popular designs. Its subtle, classic motif adds just enough interest without overwhelming the space—a perfect fit for a room layered with bold textures and patterns.

They paired the pattern with our Copper Penny finish, which beautifully complements the deep navy walls and rich green accents throughout the space. The warm metallic sheen adds drama, elegance, and that unmistakable speakeasy vibe.

“We knew we wanted the copper finish, a fairly simple tile design, and a little more dramatic molding style—and I think we found the perfect combo!”

DIY Done Right: Tin Ceilings Made Easy with SnapLock™

This renovation proves that even dramatic design upgrades—like a tin ceiling—can be a realistic DIY project. The couple selected our SnapLock™ installation system, which allows tiles to be installed directly over drywall or plaster, no additional backing needed.

For homeowners who love a good weekend project (or couples where one partner’s the idea generator and the other’s the hands-on hero), SnapLock offers an easy, foolproof path to a professional look.

“We focus on DIY projects that anyone can do. That’s another thing that drew us to ATC—we loved the ease of install with the SnapLock tiles!”

No need to hire out—just a few tools, a little time, and a lot of vision.

Big Impact, Small Budget: Creative Materials & Thrifted Finds

One of the most inspiring parts of this project is how the couple kept their budget tight without compromising on style.

They sourced furniture and decor from thrift stores, vintage markets, and even the occasional dumpster dive, giving the space layers of personality. Their mobile bar—on casters so it tucks away when not in use—was made from IKEA scratch-and-dent cabinets, peel-and-stick wallpaper, and a clever hack: a DIY marble bar top made from floor tiles that cost just $20.

“We often thrift (or even dumpster dive) for accent pieces like the vintage paintings. We also built the bar ourselves using leftover materials—we wanted to make this beautiful without breaking the bank.”

The results are proof that budget limitations can actually spark more creativity, leading to one-of-a-kind results.

From Cookie-Cutter to Character-Rich

The couple’s home started as a builder-grade blank slate, but thanks to smart design moves like the tin ceiling and dramatic molding, it’s now packed with vintage soul and old-world charm.

They chose Pattern #2—a simple yet elegant tin tile design—with a Copper Penny finish that glows against the deep navy walls and brings richness to the space. It's the perfect nod to historic German architecture, which inspired the entire transformation.

“The deep navy walls play so well against the copper ceiling... I live for a bold color choice and pattern play!”

Layered, Lived-In, and Never Matchy-Matchy

If you think bold color and pattern don’t mix—think again. From floral seating to plaid and striped accessories, and color pops ranging from emerald to chartreuse, this space layers texture, tone, and pattern effortlessly.

“I live for a bold color choice and pattern play, but steer away from anything too matchy-matchy. The deep navy walls play so well against the copper ceiling.”

And with thoughtful furniture like an extendable dining table (with leaves hidden under the sofa!), the room easily shifts from formal to fun.

A Space for Every Occasion

What was once just a dining room is now a hub for game nights, date nights, family dinners, bourbon tastings, and dancing—a true multifunctional space designed to be lived in and loved.
