Frequently Asked Questions

What installation methods are available and do they all qualify under BABA?

All three installation methods — Nail-Up (over wood substrate), Drop-In (for standard 2×2 suspended grid systems), and Snap-Lock (directly into ceiling drywall) — use the same domestically manufactured tin-plated steel panels. All are BABA compliant regardless of the installation method specified.

Are the tiles made from genuine tin-plated steel or substitute materials?

Genuine tin-plated steel — always. American Tin Ceilings uses only .010-gauge T1-grade tin-plated steel (made from 25% recycled steel with a 100% virgin tin coating), the same material specification as original 19th-century tin ceilings. We never use aluminum, plastic, foam, or other substitute materials. This matters both for authenticity and for BABA compliance: genuine tin-plated steel clearly meets the domestic iron and steel requirements of the Act.

Can American Tin Ceilings supply large-format institutional or government orders?

Yes. We regularly supply large-scale commercial and institutional projects. Our team can provide square footage estimation support, coordinate with GC procurement timelines, and confirm production capacity early in the specification phase. Contact us with your project scope and we'll confirm lead times and availability.

Which types of projects require BABA compliance?

BABA applies to projects receiving federal financial assistance for infrastructure — including public buildings, transportation facilities, water infrastructure, and community development projects funded through IIJA programs. Projects funded by HUD, EPA, FHWA, DOE, and similar agencies are frequently covered. Your project owner or legal counsel can confirm whether your specific project triggers BABA requirements.

What documentation does American Tin Ceilings provide for BABA compliance?

provide a self-certification letter attesting that our products meet Build America, Buy America Act requirements. This is a general blanket certification covering all standard American Tin Ceiling tiles currently in production — not project-specific. For projects that need to discuss specific details, we're happy to connect directly. Technical spec sheets are also available for immediate download on our specifications page.

Are all American Tin Ceilings products BABA compliant?

Yes. Every tin ceiling tile, wall panel, backsplash tile, and molding we manufacture is produced entirely in Palmetto, Florida — from stamping through finishing, and quality inspection. All products are BABA compliant with no waiver required. Our products are available across all three installation methods: Nail-Up, Drop-In, and Snap-Lock.

What makes American Tin Ceilings products eligible under BABA's construction materials and manufactured products categories?

Our products are made from T1-grade tin-plated steel — an iron and steel product — with all manufacturing processes conducted in the United States. This means they satisfy BABA requirements for both construction materials and manufactured products. Because we conduct every production step domestically, our domestic content percentage far exceeds the 65% threshold required for manufactured products.

Do American Tin Ceilings products meet fire rating requirements for institutional and federal buildings?

Yes. Our tin-plated steel panels are fire-rated to a 1-hour rating per ASTM E 84-03b, meeting the fire safety requirements of institutional, commercial, and government building applications. Fire rating documentation is available alongside BABA compliance documentation on request.
