General FAQs
What is the actual size of your tin panels?
All of our tin ceiling panels measure 24" x 24" and cover 4 sq. ft. The Nail-Up panels are 24" + a 1/4" nail rail. Our Drop-In panels are 23 3/4" x 23 3/4" and fit all standard 15/16" grids with a 2 ft. x 2 ft. (24" x 24") suspension system.
What size patterns do you offer?
We offer 6", 12" and 24" patterns within the 24" x 24" format. 6" pattern tiles repeat 16 times per panel, 12" patterns repeat 4 times per tin panel.
What types of tin panels do you offer?
We offer three different types of tin ceiling panels that differ based upon the installation application. Snap Lock™: Our patented panel type is the only tin ceiling tile system in the world that can be installed over drywall, plaster or popcorn directly with screws. Nail-Up: Requires a wood substrate for installation (plywood, furring strips, joists). Drop-In: Used in standard 2' x 2' suspended ceiling grid systems with 15/16" wide rails. We also offer an acoustical version of our Drop-In tiles that are microperformated for sound performance.
What patterns are available in Snap Lock™?
Snap Lock™ tiles are available in all patterns except #9, #15, #33 and #34.
What are the general specifications of your tin ceiling panels?
Our tin ceiling tiles are the original .010 gauge tin-plated steel in the authentic 2' x 2' size representative of genuine "Turn of the Century" t in. They are made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating.
What is the proper maintenance for the finished panels?
The effects of ultraviolet light, pollution, dirt, grime, and salt deposits can all accumulate on our powder coated finishes over time. If you notice any of this, be sure to remove any residue to extend the life of your finished tiles. To clean, all you need is a mild soap and water. Carefully remove any loose debris with a wet sponge. Use a soft, non-abrasive brush or cloth, and a mild household detergent to remove dust, salt and other deposits. Rinse off with clean, fresh water. Detergents that recommend the use of gloves should be avoided as this is a good indication that the detergent is harsh and, therefore, unsuitable for cleaning the powder coating. Although some strong solvents are recommended for removing sealants or other building residues, these may be harmful to the extended life of the powder coating. The damage may not be immediately visible and may take up to twelve months to appear. If paint splashes, sealants or other residue need to be removed, use either Methylated Spirits, Turpentine or White Spirits.
Your materials are superior to your competitors', yet your prices are less. How can this be?
We pride ourselves on offering authentic representations of the original tin ceiling panels from the 1800s. We only use real tin plated steel, not anodized aluminum, poly alloy or plastic. Our .010 (31 gauge) metal thickness is the same gauge used in turn of the century tin ceilings. We can sell a superior product for less than our competitors because we are both the manufacturer and distributor. There are no middlemen, no markups and since our website is a virtual storefront, we can minimize overhead and operating costs, all savings which we pass on to the consumer.
What are 'Unfinished' tin ceiling tiles?
Our unfinished tin is just that, raw tin plated steel that looks similar to a light brushed nickel. It is beautiful by itself, but we do recommend finishing it with at least a clear polyurethane coating as a protectant.
What is the fire rating of your tin ceiling panels?
Click here to view a fire rating report courtesy of the United States Testing Company, Inc. This report will generally satisfy building inspectors' requests.
Do you offer any accessories to accent your tin panels?
Yes, we sell crown molding, flat molding, j channel molding, and filler in all of our colors. We also offer matching switch plates and outlet covers.
What are your prices?
Our tin panel prices vary by color and installation type. Check out our cost calculator on the product pages after selecting an installation type.
Do you ship samples?
Yes, sample packs include six-inch tin color swatches showcasing our beautiful powder coat finishes. Single panels can also be purchased for design and embossment sampling ($5 per pattern sample).
Can I return a sample if I don't like it?
Ceiling purchases over $500 can be credited for one sample pack, upon request. Full panel samples in original condition can be returned for a credit once a ceiling of over $500 is purchased.
How long will it take to receive my order?
Standard colors (Non-Artisan) will ship in 2-3 weeks. Hand finished Artisan colors will ship in 3-4 weeks.
Can I install Snap Lock™ into a plaster ceiling?
Snap Lock™ tiles can be anchored directly into a drywall ceiling with #6 drywall screws, and generally, this installation method can be applied to plaster ceilings as well, although, you will want to use metal plaster screws.
Can I use your product for a kitchen wall backsplash?
Yes, pressed tin is becoming very popular for kitchen backsplashes. A Nail-Up panel is required for wall applications and 6” repeating patterns are recommended. Installation is easy, simply cut and glue the tiles to the wall with an adhesive like Liquid Nails. If you want to finish the look with molding, we recommend our J Channel Molding or a wood molding of your choosing. Snap Lock™ tiles are intended for ceiling installations only and are therefore not recommended for backsplashes.
What do you suggest for small rooms?
The rule of thumb is that any room smaller than 12' x 12' should use a 12" repeating pattern like #1, #2, #4, #5, #8, #16, #18 and #24 to give the illusion that it's larger than it is. If you have a 10' x 10' room using full 24" pattern panels, you will have only 25 patterns on the ceiling (100 sq. ft. divided by 4 sq.), whereas a 12" pattern will create 100 repeats. Areas smaller than 6' x 6' should use a 6" repeating pattern like #3, #19, #20, #21, or #30.
What do you suggest for a low ceiling?
Lighter color panels can help ceilings appear higher if you have dark walls, and the opposite is true if you have light walls. 6" or 12" repeating patterns will also make it appear bigger.
What do you suggest for a bathroom?
Bathroom ceilings are usually smaller and can be more dynamic with our Premium and Artisan designer colors combined with wallpaper or faux finished walls. Depending on the height of the ceiling, a 3" or 6" crown in metal or wood will work well. If you opt for a wood crown from your local hardware store, it can easily be painted to match the tin panel colors with off the shelf spray paints.
Is trim or molding necessary?
Neither are required, but a tin ceiling without crown molding is like a picture without a frame. Trimming out your ceiling is a very important part of the process. The tin ceiling panels often need to be cut to fit flush against the wall, and therefore trim should be applied to cover the edges. Even if you are using filler with a 24" pattern, you generally need trim. The only exception is when you already have crown molding installed. We manufacture metal crown in 2 ", 4", 6", and 8 " designs in all of our standard colors. You can also use a wood trim, which is readily available from your local lumber store. Wood trims can be color matched using off the shelf spray paints.
What is filler?
Filler panels are used as a border for your panels to help maintain visual consistency and transition between your main pattern and the outside edges of your ceiling. Patterned and hammered filler transitions from the edge of a 24" pattern to the wall, where the filler edge is then covered with trim. Imagine installing 24" pattern panels in a room that measures 15' x 17'. Cutting the last panels in half to fit the last foot of the wall would leave a visual inconsistency between the pattern and the trim. To avoid this, install 14' x 16' of 24" pattern panels from the center, then finish the remaining area with filler (2 runs of 14' and 2 runs of 16'). Our filler ships in 24" x 24" sheets and can easily be cut to any size with tin snips or a guillotine paper cutter. Mitering the corners on a 45-degree angle enhances the aesthetic.
What size crown molding do I need?
When you are measuring for trim, remember that crown molding projects out from the wall. The distance of the projection depends upon the width of your crown. Our 6" metal crown projects 4.5" from the wall to cover the panels. The projection of the crown is important when you have a ceiling panel layout that is not flush to the wall. For example, if your ceiling is 10' 3" by 12'3", you can easily install a 10' x 12' tin ceiling from the center out, leaving a 3" gap all the way around.
Is there an alternative to crown molding?
Shoe Molding is the most popular ceiling trim and is the easiest to work with. It adds a subtle touch to a beautiful tin ceiling. Shoe molding is 3/4" x 3/4" and is readily available from lumber stores for about 40 cents per linear foot. It works well in kitchens, baths, low ceilings or anywhere you want to avoid a bulky crown.
What if I have existing crown molding?
No problem...this is where filler comes in. Use a 24" or 12" pattern to layout the ceiling from center to the wall. If you have a 13' x 13' room, you will use a 12' x 12' repeating pattern. The remaining 6" around will be completed using filler, which is thin enough to fit under the lip of the existing crown molding. When installing Nail-Up panels, the filler edge can be placed directly underneath the edge of the tin panel. With Snap Lock™, the filler should be cut to the edge of the tin panel where the male flange meets the filler. Where the female flange meets the filler, the filler will slide into the flange space. Use Liquid Nails and a few brad nails to secure. Feel free to contact our design department to discuss any questions, concerns or challenges with your ceiling plan.
What if I want to return my product for a refund or exchange?
American Tin Ceilings allows returns on certain products up to seven days after delivery. Unfinished and standard color products are returnable minus a 25% restocking fee. The customer is responsible for return shipping costs. The product must return in new sellable condition and the customer must receive a return authorization within seven days of delivery. Premium and Artisan color products are not returnable due to the nature of color variance found in each production run.
What are your general policies?
Your closeout finishes appear to be available in regular inventory. Is there a difference?
We develop our own high-end industrial powder coat finishes in-house. This means that our product goes through various iterations of development. Previous versions may be discontinued in place of the new improved versions. We archive all the leftover stock of previous versions of select powder coat finishes and sell them in our closeout section at a reduced price. They can no longer be matched to the current regular inventory and there are limited quantities available. Once this fixed quantity has been depleted, that specific discontinued finish can no longer be purchased.
What kind of nails should I use with the Nail-Up tin panels?
A pneumatic brad nailer with 18 gauge brad nails is the most common fastening method. These are readily available at your local home improvement center or hardware store. Decorative nails like cone-heads, dome-head finishing and upholstery nails are commonly used for manual applications but are a lot of work to install on an entire ceiling. After installation, the nails can be dabbed with matching paint to reduce their visibility.
Where can I purchase touch-up paint to match your beautiful powder coat finishes?
Bring one of your tin panels to a local hardware or auto paint retailer to acquire the closest match. Antiques will often require a multi-step finishing technique. First spray the base coat, then mist a black overspray to simulate the antiquing. Remember, metal finishing rules apply.
Do you sell light ring covers for recessed lights?
We do not sell the covers for recessed lights. We do however suggest that you paint the fixture that comes with the light when you purchase them from the store. Generally, complimentary spray paint is available from your local home center.
Why do my panels have corner holes?
As part of our manufacturing process, we apply small holes (approximately 1/8") to the panel corners. These holes accommodate small wire hooks that both hang the panels and create a ground during the powder coating process. These holes are covered up when the panels are installed.
Backsplash FAQs
What are the sizes of the panel?
All Panels are 2' x 2'. We do recommend that you use a 6" repeating pattern, so that when you cut the panels, they are visually forgiving. Larger patterns seem to overwhelm the small area.
Can you install the panels over exisiting ceramic tile?
Yes, you would install using a strong construction adhesive, or a ceramic tile adhesive. You may want to rough the surface slightly for better adhesion.
How do the panels go together on the wall?
Our panels have a 1/4" overlapping nail rail, that overlap during installation, allowing for a transition from one panel to the next.
Do I need Edge Trim or Corner Molding?
The edge trim is a nice finishing touch for the panels, especially where you end with a cut piece. For corner molding, it makes for a smooth transition in 90 degree inside corners. Typically where the panels meet the counter top, you will not need edge trim.
Are the panels self adhesive?
No, you will need to use a construction adhesive purchased separately.
Do you offer an 18" x 24" panel?
No, all of the panels would be 24" x 24". This will also allow you to use behind larger areas such as your cooktop. In areas less than 24", you can easily cut the panels to fit.
Can you install the Backsplash panels before your cabinets are installed?
Yes, you can install them before the cabinets, although the most common installation is after you have cabinets and counters installed.

Fire Protection
Introduced to America in the early 19th century, tin ceiling tiles are historically known not just for their originality and elegance, but also for their function as a fire protectant. In urban areas, tin ceilings were installed in buildings that had businesses on the first floor and tenants in living apartments or rooms above. On numerous accounts, tin ceilings helped desist fires from spreading to the upper levels, saving lives. Metal tin tiles have a fire rating of over one-hour.
Some metals like aluminum and steel aren’t combustible, but buckle under intense heat. Since our tiles are made from T1 grade tin plated steel, they are 0.010 thick and sturdy, thus carrying an ASTM E 84-03b approval rating (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). We’ve tested our product with 1000°F of heat being delivered by a propane torch for over 50 seconds and as far back as 1914, the Fire Underwriter’s Association has been running similar tests to ensure authenticity.
With more than 2,500 people killed per year in residential fires, when you undergo a home remodel, it’s important to consider the safety of the materials you’re choosing for your family, pets and loved ones. When you compare tin plated steel to plastic, which melts in just 5 ½ minutes, which would you rather have in your house?
Green / Sustainable Tin Ceiling Tiles
Being green is an important aspect in business today. We take pride in what we do and how we do it.
If you care about the environment and adopting a sustainable lifestyle, you may be concerned about what products you're using in your home – and rightfully so, being it is the place you spend the most time. With many building materials containing toxic chemicals, you can rest assured our tin ceiling tiles are not only eco-friendly, but completely safe. The American Tin Ceiling Company is environmentally conscious and has been long before going green was a trend.
Recycled Materials
Our American-made tin ceiling tiles are manufactured from repurposed steel leftover from the automotive, appliance, container, industrial machinery, construction, and oil and gas industries. They are made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating. The tin used in the plating process is sourced from conflict-free countries. There are no harmful production processes and we control every step of the stamping and coating processes to ensure it meets our stringent requirements. Our packaging is also made from recycled material.
No Toxic VOCs
Our powder-coating used for all of our colors are non-toxic and non-flammable. Powder coating, the company’s finishing process adheres to the “Five E’s” – environmental compliance, energy savings, efficiency, excellence of finish, and economy. Powder coating contains no solvents, which are found in liquid finishes like paints, also known as VOC’s – volatile organic compounds. VOCS are dangerous in that they can degrade air quality or cause breathing problems and other health effects. Since powder coating uses only dry paint, it requires no special venting.
Specifications
All of our products are manufactured from a T1 grade tin-plated steel. They are made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating. This is generally referred to as “bright tinplate.” The material thickness is 0.010”. All our panels are 24” x 24”, regardless of pattern or color and all moldings are sold in 4’ lengths. All of our finishes are powder-coated. Powder coating is an electrostatic process where polyester resin is baked onto the panels at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Our artisan finishes are hand applied over a powder coated base color. All of our products carry an ASTM E 84-03b fire rating (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). If you have any questions, call the design center at 888.231.7500.
To specify our material, we need the following:
1. Pattern number
2. Tile type (Nail-Up/Backsplash, Drop-In, Snap Lock™, Acoustical Nail-Up, Acoustical Drop-In)
The Snap Lock™ panel type is our proprietary interlocking flange system designed to attach directly to existing drywall, popcorn or plaster ceilings with #6 drywall screws (intended for ceiling installations only). The screws are not visible.
The Nail-Up panel has a 1/4" overlapping seam and is designed to be nailed to a wood substrate (plywood, furring strips, joists). We recommend 18 gauge brad nails for installation. The nails are visible, but can be concealed with touch-up paint.
Drop-In panels are made to fit a standard 24" x 24" suspended ceiling grid system with 15/16" bar widths. Our Drop-In panels have a 1/8" embossed edge that helps it nest into the grid opening. If you have a 24" x 48" grid, we offer T-bar pieces to easily convert it into a 24" x 24" grid.
3. Color
4. Optional materials (molding, accessories, installation items)
Plastic VS Tin Tiles
We know you have a choice when it comes to ceiling tiles and home remodeling. In fact, you're probably overwhelmed with choices from colors and patterns to finishes and materials. But when it comes to deciding between real tin and a plastic impostor, consider a few things:
Cost
While many simply assume that plastic is less expensive, this is rarely the case. White plastic tiles start at $3.50/sq. ft, while a range of white tin tiles cost as little as $3.00/sq. ft. Raw tin is available for as little as $1.75/sq. ft.
Durability
Made from real T1 grade tin-plated steel, our tin tiles are 0.010″ thick to ensure they’re a long lasting, permanent fixture in your home or commercial space.
Aesthetics
Nothing can replace the integrity and authenticity of tin – the difference is visible immediately.
Color
Plastic color ranges are limited and have difficulty displaying realistic sheen. Our tin ceiling tiles are powder-coated, a superior finish compared to paint or injection. Finishes are genuine and authentic.
Installation Options
Plastic ceiling tiles are glued which can deteriorate over time. Our tin tiles are offered in three installation methods – Nail-Up, Drop-In and patented Snap Lock™, that can be affixed to virtually any building material and stand the test of time.
Fire Rating
Metal Ceilings have a one-hour fire rating, making them much safer in case of accident. Plastic melts in just 5 ½ minutes and releases toxic gases.
Environmental Concerns
Tin is also better for the environment, emitting no dangerous VOCs, which can degrade air quality or cause breathing or health problems over time. Tin ceiling tiles are made in part from authentic US steel, the most recycled material in the world so it's both green and durable. Plastic comes largely in part from crude oil. Which would you rather have in your home or commercial space?
Less costly, better for the environment, more durable, and safer are all reasons to choose authentic tin over plastic ceiling tiles.
Our Tin VS Theirs
Premium-tin plated steel
These tiles (offered by American Tin Ceilings) have a bright tin coating over black plate recycled steel that allows it to be clear coated and is bright. Tin plated steel costs more as the real tin is used for coating. This also allows us to stock a large inventory as tin plate protects the black plate from rusting.
Black plate
The base metal which our leading competitor sells, and does not contain a tin coating. Black plate has a gray hue to it so clear coat shows up as gray and dull. There is no shine to black plate. The steel has no coating, resulting in rusting quickly in humid environments.
Aluminum
Lighter than tin, but gray in color, and does not provide crisp patterns due to the softness of the metal. This tends to oxidize and must be cleaned with acetone prior to painting or powder coating. Aluminum is more expensive and sells for more than tin plated steel.
Manufacturing
We are the Largest Manufacturer and Direct Shipper of Tin Ceiling Tiles in the World
From receiving the metal to stamping the designs, powder coating the finishes and shipping the tiles directly to your door, we pride ourselves on offering 100% American-made products from our Bradenton, Florida location. As one of the only on-shore tin ceiling manufacturers and suppliers, you may be wondering how we can offer the lowest prices in the world for finished tiles without sacrificing quality materials or US jobs. We’ll break down the process for you:
American Tin Ceiling Company purchases large coil stock from US steel suppliers.
Based in the USA, our material manufacturers develop a wide range of steel products for the automotive, appliance, container, industrial machinery, construction, and oil and gas industries. We have developed a great relationship with our suppliers over the years so we are able to negotiate the lowest cost of raw materials and ensure availability to meet demand. Our panels are made with T1 grade tin-plated steel that is made from 25% recycled steel, with a 100% virgin coating.
Tin is stamped and embossed.
From our stamping presses, we emboss all 35+ patterns and are continually developing new designs. If you purchase unfinished tiles, they're now ready to ship. We stock over 100,000 unfinished panels in our warehouse so almost everything is ready to go as soon as you place an order.
Add some color.
Powder coating is a formula made of polyester resin, pigment and occasionally pulverized metal, which are electrostatically charged with opposing currents and sprayed onto the panels. This electricity ensures the product surface is evenly coated with long lasting adhesive, which is better for the environment and safer than regular paint because they emit no harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). We develop all of our own custom formulated colors and antiquing methods from industry leaders like Dupont and TCI that you won’t find from any other manufacturer.
To finish the tiles, the panels are run through an automatic powder booth where spray guns are used to coat the panels with powder. Once the color sets, they are put into a 400-450 degree oven to melt the pigments and gel them to the tiles. This process ensures the highest quality, most authentic and long lasting finishes in the industry.
Shipping direct to your door.
Orders are shipped by a variety of carriers depending on your location, and the size of the order. We ship internationally and offer the industry's best prices, often over 50% off standard freight rates through large volume deals negotiated with recognized carriers.
Finishing Unfinished Panels
Preparing Unfinished Tin Tiles
We recommend that unfinished panels be finished to prevent oxidation. They can be painted or clear coated.
If you plan to paint unfinished tiles, you must first treat them before applying paint. This requires a primer, which the paint will adhere to. Metal requires an ‘oil-based’ primer. When shopping, make sure you purchase one that has a rust inhibitor to avoid corrosion. Spray paints are almost always used when finishing metal.
Clear-Coat Unfinished Tin Tiles
If you plan to seal your unfinished metal panels yourself instead of purchasing a silver powder-coated tile from us, you can use a polyurethane suitable for metal. It is recommended to use a powder-coated finish for durability, however some projects require they be finished in the field. An oil based product must be used.
Metric Drop-In Ceiling Tiles
All of our Drop-In patterns are available in 600 mm x 600 mm tile sizes for use in 24 mm metric suspended ceiling grid systems. Tin panels offer a distinctive upgrade from standard tile material. In addition to being more visually appealing, our tin tiles are more durable and longer lasting. We look forward to hearing from you for your next remodel or suspended ceiling tile replacement.

Acoustic Drop-In
Standard Drop-In ceiling tiles fit all standard 2’ x 2’ grids and fit into a 9⁄16" or 15⁄16" suspended grid system. These ceiling tiles, regardless of pattern dimension, are 23 3⁄4” x 23 3⁄4”. Our tiles are uniquely designed with The Edge that sits flush with grid. The Edge is proprietary to us, a minimal adjustment to the panel design so the tiles lay completely flat, leaving no gaps. We offer Drop-In Clips that put pressure on the panel to lock them into place. We suggest that suspended grids be painted to match the color of the tiles to provide a beautiful, professional finish.
Acoustic Nail-Up
When installing these panels, the installer must leave sufficient room behind the panel so the acoustical pad will fit. The easiest way to acheieve this is to build a grid that allows the acoustical pads to be recessed into the ceiling or wall with enough wubstrate exposed to affix the panels with nails.
Testimonials
"I just wanted to write to let you know that the tin ceiling worked out great. The nail up acoustic ceiling was definitely the way to go. The space looks and sounds great. Thanks for all your help."
- John | from Bryant's
"The product, perforated 24" x 24" stamped & painted retro tin ceiling tiles, went up without a hitch. I found it hard to believe the acoustical properties of the installation, but it has enhanced the busy diner space aesthetically without sacrificing the ability to engage in conversations & enjoy the dining experience. The look is detailed, authentic and pleasing. I have already heartily recommended this product & your organization to others & will no doubt do so again."

Rust-Proof
All of our tin tiles (except Unfinished) have a commercial-grade powdercoat finish and are protected against rust. You can install them in damp spaces, like bathrooms, without fear of them rusting or sagging from the humidity.
Fire Protection
Our tin tiles have a fire rating of over one-hour. They carry an ASTM E 84-03b approval rating (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). With more than 2,500 people killed per year in residential fires, it’s important to consider the safety of the materials you choose for your home.
Washable
To clean, all you need is a mild soap and water. Carefully remove any loose debris with a wet sponge. Use a soft, non-abrasive brush or cloth, and a mild household detergent to remove dust, salt and other deposits. Rinse with clean water.
Acoustic Options
If you’re looking to solve noise, then our Acoustic Performance tin tiles are your solution. We offer two installation types: Acoustic Nail-Up and Acoustic Drop-In. When paired with acoustical pads, they reduce noise and room echo up to 85%.
50+ Colors
Choose from over 50 colors, ranging from standard and premium colors, to Artisan colors that are finished by hand by a master painter. Our color palette is chosen by interior designers for its breadth of options and superior color retention.
6 Installation Types
We have you covered for ceiling, wall, backsplash, and wainscotting applications with 6 installation types: Drop-In, Nail-Up, Snap Lock™, Backsplash, Acoustic Nail-Up, and Acoustic Drop-In.
